Rodent Breeding

Some keepers wish to keep, breed and raise their own rodents. This may be because they are having difficulty sourcing rodents to feed their reptiles, and wish to always have rodents available to them. Or it may be as many baby snakes can be fussy about prey and may not wish to eat defrosted food straight away.

The most commonly raised rodents are Rats, Mice and Multimammates (also known as Multis or ASFs). Breeder rodents should be kept in a small group consisting of 1 male and 2 or more females, they require access to food and water at all times and regular cleaning. Most opt to keep them in Rodent Lab Cages, due to their compact size and ease of cleaning.

Complete pelleted diets for rodents are available, though the animals will appreciate fresh produce at times. Water should be provided in a water bottle.
