The White’s Tree Frog (Ranoidea caerulea), also known as the Dumpy Tree Frog, is a hardy amphibian popular in the reptile and amphibian-keeping community. Known for their calm temperament, large toe pads, and comical appearance, they are an excellent choice for beginner amphibian keepers.

In the wild, they inhabit tropical and subtropical forests and are often found near human settlements, sometimes taking refuge in bathrooms, lavatories or water tanks. They are predominantly arboreal, using their large toe pads to cling to smooth surfaces.

In captivity, White’s Tree Frogs thrive in vertically oriented enclosures that provide plenty of climbing opportunities with branches, cork bark, and foliage. A moist substrate such as coco fibre or soil mix helps maintain humidity levels of 50–70%, with regular misting. Good ventilation is important to prevent stagnant, overly damp conditions. A basking area of 28–30°C should be provided, with the remainder of the enclosure kept at 22–26°C, and a night drop to ~18–20°C. Access to clean, dechlorinated water is essential for soaking.

Their diet consists mainly of gut-loaded insects, such as crickets, roaches, and locusts, occasionally supplemented with waxworms or other invertebrates as treats. Calcium and vitamin supplementation should be used regularly to support bone health. Care should be taken to prevent obesity, as this species is prone to overeating.

White’s Tree Frogs are docile, long-lived amphibians, often tolerating gentle handling better than most frogs. With proper care, they can live 15–20 years in captivity, making them one of the most rewarding amphibians to keep.
