The Tokay Gecko (Gekko gecko) is one of the largest and most recognisable geckos in the world, well known for its striking blue-grey body patterned with bright orange or red spots. Native across much of Southeast Asia, this powerful, nocturnal lizard is equally at home in tropical forests and in human settlements, where its loud, characteristic “to-kay” call gives it its common name.

In captivity, Tokay Geckos require a tall, secure enclosure with plenty of vertical climbing space, cork bark, branches, and hides. They thrive with an ambient temperature of 24–28°C, with a warmer basking spot around 30–32°C, and tolerate moderate night-time drops. Humidity should be maintained around 60–80% with regular misting, ensuring good airflow to prevent stagnation.

Their diet should consist of a wide range of live insects (crickets, roaches, locusts, mealworms, and more). Feeder insects should always be gut-loaded and dusted with calcium and vitamins to maintain health.

Tokay Geckos are long-lived and hardy, capable of reaching 15–20 years in captivity. While striking and impressive, they are also often defensive and quick to bite, making them less suitable as a handling pet compared to many other geckos. However, with the right environment and respect for their temperament, they make a fascinating display species and remain one of the most iconic geckos in herpetoculture.
