Isopod keeping is an ever-growing hobby that particular owes itself to this group of Woodlice and one species in particular; Cubaris sp. “Rubber Ducky” which became an online sensation. The genus Cubaris contains 100 described and even more undescribed species; the majority kept in the hobby are unidentified so are given a ‘nickname’.

Cubaris are known for their ability to conglobate, or roll into a ball, a trait shared by other isopod genera such as Armadiliidium. However in general the care of Armadillidium is much easier as they are from a more temperate climate and so are tolerant of a far greater range of temperatures compared the usually tropical and humid requirements of Cubaris sp.

As its name suggests, Cubaris sp. ‘Thai Blue Angel’ is from Thailand, similar to ‘Panda Kings’ this species is good for a beginner who wishes to start keeping Cubaris.  A relatively large species, they are hardy and once settled in they are productive breeders. Although referred to as the Blue Angel they actually exhibit variable colouration; ranging from white to blue, to cream and even orange.

Originating in South East Asia, they require high levels of humidity (55 – 85%) in order to thrive; too dry and they will struggle to moult. It is possible to boost humidity and create the perfect microclimate for these animals by covering the substrate with leaves, moss, bark and other bits of wood to trap moisture near the substrate.

Many Cubaris species are fossorial or semi-fossorial and regularly burrow, however this species tends to prefer to cling to the underside of bark and other wooden pieces. This relatively forgiving Cubaris species makes a great addition for a beginner keeper wanting to branch out into this family of diverse animals.

Sold in a tub of 10.

Please note that for the health and safety of these animals we will not ship Woodlice in cold weather.
