The Sugar Glider (Petaurus breviceps) is a small, nocturnal marsupial renowned for its ability to glide between trees using a membrane of skin (patagium) stretching from its wrists to its ankles. Native to Australia and New Guinea, this highly arboreal species is exceptionally agile and social, living in family groups that communicate through a variety of vocalisations and scent marking. Their large eyes provide excellent night vision, while their long, bushy tail assists with balance and steering during glides.
In captivity, P. breviceps requires a spacious, vertically oriented enclosure with plenty of climbing branches, ropes, vines, and elevated sleeping pouches. Enrichment is essential, as sugar gliders are highly intelligent and active animals that benefit from opportunities to forage, climb, and explore. Temperatures should be maintained between 22–28 °C, avoiding prolonged exposure to cold temperatures or drafts. Moderate humidity and a consistent day/night cycle help replicate their natural environment.
Their diet is omnivorous and should provide a balanced combination of nectar or sap substitutes, fresh fruits and vegetables, insects, and a suitable source of protein and calcium. Commercially formulated sugar glider diets are commonly used alongside fresh foods to ensure complete nutrition. Live insects such as crickets or mealworms may be offered regularly to encourage natural foraging behaviour.
P. breviceps is a highly social species and should be kept in compatible pairs or small groups, as solitary housing can lead to stress and behavioural issues. Lifespan in captivity is typically 10–15 years with appropriate care.
