The Steudner’s Sand Gecko (Tropiocolotes steudneri), often called the Dwarf Gecko, is one of the smallest gecko species in the world, rarely exceeding 5 cm in total length. Native to arid and sandy environments of North Africa and the Middle East, this minute gecko is adapted to life in hot, dry regions where it shelters under rocks or burrows into sand during the day.
In captivity, T. steudneri requires a dry desert-style enclosure with fine sand or sandy-soil substrate, small rocks, and secure hiding places. Being nocturnal, they are most active at night, when they emerge to hunt for insects. A basking area of 30–32°C should be provided, with a cooler zone maintained in the mid-20s°C and night-time temperature drops to around 18°C. Humidity should remain very low, reflecting their natural desert habitat.
Their diet should consist of very small live insects, such as pinhead crickets, flightless fruit flies, and other tiny invertebrates. All food should be gut-loaded and supplemented with calcium and vitamins to ensure proper health.
Steudner’s Geckos are fascinating, tiny lizards ideal for keepers with an interest in small communal gecko species. With proper care, they can live 5–8 years in captivity.
