This fossil tooth comes from the Steppe Mammoth (Mammuthus trogontherii), an extinct species that lived across Europe and Asia during the Middle Pleistocene. This species is considered an early relative of the Woolly Mammoth and was among the largest members of the mammoth family.

Steppe Mammoths were large grazing herbivores adapted to open grassland and steppe environments. Their molar teeth were highly specialised, with multiple enamel ridges designed for grinding abrasive vegetation such as grasses and sedges. Like modern elephants, mammoths replaced their molars several times throughout life, which is why isolated fossil teeth are relatively common.

Fossils from Hungary and surrounding regions are associated with Ice Age steppe habitats that supported large populations of mammoths and other megafauna. These deposits often preserve well-defined tooth structure, enamel ridges, and natural wear patterns.

This specimen shows the characteristic layered enamel and dentine typical of mammoth molars and is suitable for study, display, or inclusion in a fossil collection.
