Nesodillo arcangelii ‘Shiro Utsuri’ was previously named Cubaris sp. ‘Shiro Utsuri’, however in 2022 it was decided it was in fact a colour variety of the species Nesodillo arcangelii. It is a medium-sized species from tropical habitats in Taiwan, though the colour variety was developed in Japan. Like other Armadillidae, they will conglobate (roll up into a ball) when disturbed.

N. arcangelii is a hardy species compared to other tropical species and if it wasn’t for its recent reclassification, you could say it’s one of the easiest Cubaris for beginners. For a tropical Isopod they are adaptable in terms of temperature; though they are susceptible to dry conditions which can lead to moulting issues and potentially death. It is possible to boost humidity and create the perfect microclimate for these animals by covering the substrate with leaves, moss, bark and other bits of wood to trap moisture near the substrate.

N. archangeli are a relatively active species that readily roam their environment at all times of the day. Though they will still occasionally bury, so a deep substrate layer is beneficial. This will also allow them to burrow down to more humid layers below if the surface becomes too dry.

Being Japanese in origin, the morph name Shiro Utsuri comes from the Shiro Utsuri variety of Koi fish. In Japanese it just means “black and white”, an apt description as these isopods are white with varying amounts of black spots on them. Similar to the Dalmatian, Dairy Cow and other similar genes seen in other species.

Sold in a tub of 10.

Please note that for the health and safety of these animals we will not ship Woodlice in cold weather.
