The Schokari Sand Snakes (Psammophis schokari) is a slender, extremely fast diurnal snake well adapted to arid and desert environments. This species shows variable colouration, with some individuals displaying a striking striped pattern while others exhibit blotched or uniform morphs, providing camouflage in different terrains. Known for their speed and alertness, Schokari Racers are active hunters, relying on both vision and agility to pursue prey.
In captivity, P. schokari requires a large and secure enclosure with plenty of floor space, as they are highly active and restless. A sandy or sandy-soil mix makes an ideal substrate, with rock piles, branches, and hides for security. A basking area of 30–34°C should be offered, while the rest of the enclosure should remain in the mid-20s°C, with cooler zones and night-time temperature drops mimicking their natural environment. Strong lighting with optional UVB is beneficial for their well-being and to replicate their diurnal activity patterns.
Their diet consists primarily of lizards in the wild, but many can be transitioned onto rodents in captivity, especially captive-bred individuals. However, wild-caught specimens may remain more lizard-specialised, requiring patience and careful feeding strategies.
Schokari Sand Snakes can live 12–15 years in captivity with proper care. While highly attractive and fascinating snakes, their speed, nervous disposition, and dietary challenges mean they are best suited to experienced keepers who can provide a large, enriching habitat and appropriate feeding.
