The Sabelpoot Chicken, also known as the Booted Bantam, is a charming true bantam breed, easily recognised by its extensive feathering on the legs and feet. Originating in Europe, with strong roots in Belgium and the Netherlands, this breed has been kept for centuries as an ornamental bird, admired for both its beauty and gentle nature.

Sabelpoots are small, lightweight chickens with an upright stance and graceful appearance. Their feathered legs, often referred to as “boots,” combined with their soft plumage and neat body shape, make them a standout addition to any flock. They are known for their friendly and docile temperament, making them well suited to families, beginners, or keepers looking for calm, easy-going birds.

Our Sabelpoot hens are available in two stunning colour varieties. Millefleur birds display a rich chestnut base colour with black centres and distinctive white-tipped feathers, creating a striking speckled pattern. Lemon Millefleur offers a lighter, softer variation of this pattern, with pale lemon tones replacing the deeper chestnut, resulting in a more delicate and eye-catching appearance.

All of our chickens are hens at point of lay, meaning they are close to starting egg production. Sabelpoots typically lay small, cream-coloured eggs and are not prolific layers, but they are highly valued for their ornamental qualities and friendly personalities. They may also show broody tendencies, making them suitable for hatching eggs.

At Ridgeway Poultry we specialise in carefully selected, high-quality birds, with a particular focus on producing healthy, well-socialised chickens in a variety of colours. Each bird is raised with care to ensure it arrives in excellent condition and ready to thrive in its new environment.

Chickens require secure housing, access to a suitable run or free-range space, and a balanced diet of quality layers feed, grit, and fresh water. Silkies, due to their feathering, are less suited to very wet or muddy conditions, so a dry, well-maintained environment is recommended to keep them in the best health.
