The Robust Velvet Gecko (Nebulifera robusta) is a medium-sized gecko native to Australia. Formerly grouped within the Oedura genus, it is now placed in its own distinct genus, Nebulifera. These geckos are typically found in rocky habitats where they shelter in crevices during the day and emerge at night to forage for invertebrates. Their cryptic colouration and sturdy form make them well-adapted to their rugged environments.
In captivity, N. robusta thrives in enclosures that replicate its natural rocky habitat. Plenty of vertical and horizontal climbing opportunities should be provided using stacked rocks, cork bark, and branches. A temperature gradient of 24–28°C should be maintained with a basking spot of 30–32°C, alongside a night-time drop. Being from drier regions, they prefer moderate humidity levels (40–60%), but light evening misting can be used to provide drinking water and simulate natural conditions.
Their diet should include a wide range of gut-loaded insects such as crickets, roaches, locusts, and worms, with regular supplementation to ensure proper nutrition. They are active nocturnal hunters with a strong feeding response, particularly when given prey variety. With proper care, N. robusta can live for 10–15 years in captivity.
The Robust Velvet Gecko is an attractive and hardy species, suitable for keepers interested in Australian geckos.
