The Red-Spotted Lizard (Mesalina rubropunctata) is a small, fast-moving lacertid adapted to hot desert environments. It is typically sandy or light brown in coloration, marked with distinctive reddish or orange spots along the body, which provide camouflage among desert substrates. This species is highly active and diurnal, frequently seen darting across open ground in search of prey.
In captivity, a horizontally oriented enclosure with a sandy or sandy-soil substrate is recommended. The substrate should allow for shallow digging. Flat rocks, bark, and minimal décor should be provided to create basking areas and hiding spots while maintaining open space for movement.
Humidity should be kept low (20–40%), with excellent ventilation. A shallow water dish should be available, although this species often derives much of its hydration from prey.
Temperature should include a strong basking area and a thermal gradient, allowing effective thermoregulation. Overhead heating and UVB lighting are essential to replicate natural desert conditions and support calcium metabolism.
Feeding consists of small live insects such as crickets, small roaches, and ants. Feeding should occur frequently (3–4 times per week), with appropriately sized prey. Regular calcium and vitamin supplementation is recommended to maintain health.
