The Javan Centipede (Scolopendra subspinipes) is a large, fast-moving, and venomous centipede native to Southeast Asia. It is a generalist predator and extremely efficient ambush hunter, capable of subduing a wide range of prey, including animals larger than itself.

In captivity, a horizontally oriented enclosure with deep, moisture-retentive substrate is essential to allow burrowing and hiding. Leaf litter, bark, and cork pieces should be provided to create secure retreats. The species is nocturnal and highly secretive, spending most of the day concealed.

Humidity should be maintained at moderate to high levels (70–85%), with substrate kept slightly moist but not waterlogged. Good ventilation is important to prevent mold and stagnant conditions. A shallow water dish should always be provided.

Temperature should remain stable within a warm range, avoiding sudden fluctuations. The species does not require direct basking but benefits from consistent ambient warmth.

Feeding consists of appropriately sized live prey such as crickets, roaches, millipedes, and occasionally small vertebrates. Feeding should occur in the evening or at night when the centipede is most active. Extreme caution is required during handling or maintenance due to its potent venom and aggressive defensive behaviour.
