The Yellow Ghost Skeleton Isopod (Porcellio bolivari ‘Yellow Ghost’) is a striking variety of Porcellio bolivari, native to Spain. This form is distinguished by its pale yellow to cream colouration, giving it a ghostly appearance that stands out against natural substrates.
Like the wild type, this is a hardy species that thrives when offered both humid retreats and drier, well ventilated areas. It is less drought tolerant than some other Porcellio species and therefore benefits from a moist refugium in the enclosure. Providing a substrate mix of soil, leaf litter, and decaying wood helps maintain the right balance and encourages natural behaviour.
A number of cultivated forms of P. bolivari exist, but the ‘Yellow Ghost’ is one of the rarest and most distinctive. Where the wild type shows mottled greys and browns that blend seamlessly into its surroundings, the ‘Yellow Ghost’ stands out for its uniform pale tones, making it especially prized by isopod keepers and collectors.
This variety is highly sought after by isopod enthusiasts for its unusually bright colouration. Though smaller than some of its relatives, its appearance makes it a desirable addition to any isopod collection as well as functioning as part of a bioactive clean-up crew.
