The Orange-tailed Leaf-toed Gecko (Dixonius hangseesom) is a recently described small gecko species from NE Thailand. Its common name comes from the distinctive orange tail seen in many individuals, a striking feature that helps differentiate it from other Dixonius. Like its relatives, it is a nocturnal, ground-dwelling gecko, active at night when it forages for small invertebrates.

In the wild, D. hangseesom is found in dry forest and scrub habitats, often hiding under rocks, within leaf litter, or at the bases of shrubs. In captivity, they do best in a naturalistic terrarium with a sandy-soil substrate mixed with leaf litter and bark, providing ample hiding places. Although arboreal climbing is limited, offering small branches or twigs can enrich their environment.

Humidity should be moderate, around 60–70%, with a light evening mist to provide hydration. Good ventilation is important to prevent enclosures from becoming too damp. Temperatures between 24–28°C are suitable, with a slight night time drop.

Their diet should consist of a range of small live invertebrates, such as crickets, tiny roaches, and mini mealworms. Prey should be gut-loaded and dusted with calcium and vitamins, especially for juveniles. Feeding is best carried out during the evening hours when these geckos are naturally active.

Still uncommon in herpetoculture, D. hangseesom is of particular interest to gecko enthusiasts as it is such a newly described species. With proper care, they can live 5–8 years, making them a fascinating, small, and manageable addition for dedicated keepers.
