The Nubian Sand Gecko (Tropiocolotes nubicus) is a very small, delicate gecko adapted to arid environments. It typically exhibits pale beige to light brown coloration with fine patterning, allowing it to blend seamlessly into sandy and rocky surroundings. This species is nocturnal and highly secretive, emerging at night to hunt tiny prey.
In captivity, a small, horizontally oriented enclosure with a fine sand or sand/soil substrate is recommended. Due to its size, care should be taken to avoid overly large or open enclosures. Hides such as small rocks, bark, and tight crevices should be provided to offer security.
Humidity should be kept low to moderate (30–50%), with good ventilation. A very small, shallow water dish can be provided, though hydration is often obtained from food and occasional light misting. Care should be taken not to raise humidity excessively.
Temperature should include a warm area and a cooler gradient to allow thermoregulation. Gentle heating such as a heat mat or low-intensity overhead heat source is suitable given the species’ small size.
Feeding consists of very small live prey such as fruit flies, pinhead crickets, and other micro-invertebrates. Feeding should occur frequently (every 2–3 days) due to their fast metabolism, with appropriate calcium and vitamin supplementation.
