The Neon Blue Leg Tarantula (Birupes simoroxigorum) is a rare, fossorial tarantula species native to Papua, Indonesia. It is known for its striking coloration, particularly the vivid blue legs contrasted against a darker body. As a burrowing species, it spends the majority of its time underground and is rarely seen above the surface.
In captivity, a vertically deep, substrate-heavy enclosure is essential to allow natural burrowing behaviour. A deep layer of moisture-retentive substrate (such as soil or coco fibre) should be provided, along with minimal disturbance to allow the spider to establish a stable burrow. Surface hides can be offered but are often unused once a burrow is constructed.
Humidity should be kept moderate to high (70–80%), with good ventilation to prevent stagnant conditions. The substrate should remain slightly moist but not waterlogged. A small, shallow water dish should be provided at all times.
Temperature should be stable, avoiding excessive heat. This species does not require direct basking but benefits from a consistent, warm ambient environment.
Feeding consists of appropriately sized live insects such as crickets or roaches. Feeding should occur once or twice weekly depending on size, with prey introduced near the burrow entrance. As a shy and reclusive species, it may retreat quickly and feed out of sight.
