The Mourning Gecko (Lepidodactylus lugubris) is a small, nocturnal gecko notable for being parthenogenetic, meaning all individuals are female and can reproduce without the presence of a male. This remarkable reproductive strategy has allowed it to become widespread across tropical regions. The species is calm, prolific, and easy to maintain in captivity, making it one of the most popular small geckos for bioactive setups.
In captivity, they thrive in small, well-planted terrariums with plenty of vertical surfaces, foliage, and hiding spots. A substrate of soil, sand-soil mix, or bioactive setups works well. Humidity should be maintained at 60–80%, with regular misting to encourage hydration and egg-laying behavior. Ambient temperatures of 22–28°C, dropping slightly at night, are ideal.
Their diet should consist of live invertebrates, including fruit flies, crickets, small locusts, and mini mealworms, all gut-loaded and supplemented with calcium and vitamins. They will also take fresh fruit, nectar and powdered diets produced for other fruit eating species like Crested Geckos (e.g. Pangea, Repashy). Being nocturnal, feeding should be carried out during evening hours.
Mourning Geckos are extremely hardy and prolific breeders, capable of producing clutches of fertile eggs every few weeks. With proper care, they can live 5–8 years, making them ideal for keepers looking for a small, active, and easy to breed gecko species.
