Merulanella sp. “Ember Bee” is one of the most visually striking species of tropical isopod in the hobby today. With a vivid combination of deep black and fiery orange or yellow banding, these small, jewel-like crustaceans resemble tiny embers glowing on the forest floor—hence their name. Highly sought after for their brilliant coloration and active behaviour, they have become a prized species among serious isopod collectors.
The genus Merulanella originates from the humid forests of Southeast Asia and contains numerous undescribed species, many of which are still being studied. Like their relatives in Cubaris, they are capable of conglobation (rolling into a ball) when threatened, and they thrive in warm, stable, and humid environments. However, Merulanella are typically more active and surface-oriented than many Cubaris species, making them particularly rewarding to observe in a well-planted terrarium.
In captivity, Merulanella sp. “Ember Bee” prefer a warm environment with a humidity level maintained between 70–90%. A deep, nutrient-rich substrate composed of decaying leaf litter, rotting hardwood, and moss provides both moisture and food sources. They appreciate microhabitats with varying humidity levels, so offering both a moist area and a drier section encourages natural foraging and breeding behaviour.
Their diet should consist of decomposing plant matter, supplemented with additional foods such as high-quality fish flakes, vegetable pieces, and specialized isopod or bioactive invertebrate diets. As with all isopods, calcium availability is vital—cuttlebone or crushed limestone should be provided to support healthy moults.
While Merulanella species are somewhat delicate during acclimation, once established they reproduce well and display vibrant colours throughout their life cycle. Due to their humidity sensitivity and slower breeding rate, they are best suited to intermediate or advanced keepers comfortable maintaining stable tropical conditions.
