The Mascarene Grass Frog (Ptychadena mascareniensis) is a slender, fast-moving amphibian adapted to life in and around water-rich environments. It typically has a brown or olive coloration with darker striping or spotting, providing effective camouflage among grasses and muddy substrates. Long hind legs make it an excellent jumper, allowing rapid escape from predators.
This species is primarily diurnal to crepuscular, though it may also be active at night in humid conditions. It is strongly associated with water and is both a capable swimmer and an agile terrestrial hunter, often found at the edges of ponds or within dense vegetation.
In captivity, a semi-aquatic enclosure is recommended. A horizontally oriented setup with both land and water areas works best, using a soil-based substrate with moss or leaf litter for the terrestrial portion. Aquatic sections should be shallow and easy to access, mimicking natural pond edges.
Humidity should be kept moderate to high (60–80%), with regular misting to maintain hydration and skin health. Good ventilation is still important to prevent stagnation.
Temperature should remain stable within a warm range, with a gentle thermal gradient. This species does not require intense basking but benefits from consistent warmth.
Feeding consists of small live insects such as crickets, flies, small roaches, and other invertebrates. Feeding should occur frequently (every 1–2 days), especially for active individuals, and is best done during periods of peak activity.
