Theropods are a family of dinosaurs characterised by hollow bones and 3 fingers and toes on each limb. Originally carnivorous, a number of theropod groups evolved to become herbivores and omnivores. Theropods first appeared during the late Triassic period 231.4 million years ago. Therapoda included the majority of large terrestrial carnivores from the Early Jurassic until at least the close of the Cretaceous, about 66 Million years ago. Some Theropods were incredibly well known: Tyrannosaurus, Allosaurus, Carnotosaurus, Compsognathus etc. Therapods went on to evolve into the 11,000 living species of Birds we see today.

This fossil dinosaur tooth is from Majungasaurus crenatissimus, and was found in Madagascar. Majungasaurus was a meat-eating dinosaur that lived in Madagascar around 70 to 66 million years ago, near the end of the Cretaceous Period. It was one of the last non-bird dinosaurs before the mass extinction event.

This dinosaur belonged to the abelisaurid group, known for their short snouts, tiny arms, and strong legs. Majungasaurus grew up to 23 feet long and weighed over 1,000kg. It had a wide skull, rough-textured snout, and a small horn on top of its head—features that set it apart from other similar dinosaurs.

Fossils of Majungasaurus are well known, with many bones and skulls discovered. It was the top predator in its environment, hunting large plant-eating dinosaurs like Rapetosaurus. Interestingly, there’s evidence that it predated upon others of its own kind.

This authentic tooth comes from a truly iconic and well-studied dinosaur, offering a rare glimpse into life at the very end of the dinosaur age.
