The Leopard Fringe-fingered Lizard (Acanthodactylus pardalis) is one of the larger and more striking species in the Acanthodactylus genus, named after its leopard spots. As with its close relatives, its fringed toes are perfectly adapted for sprinting across loose desert sands, where it is a fast, wary, and highly active species. These lizards are primarily diurnal, spending their days basking in intense heat and actively hunting for small insects.
In captivity, A. pardalis requires a hot, open desert-style setup with a basking area reaching 35–40°C and an ambient gradient of 26–32°C. Good ventilation and strong UVB lighting are essential to replicate natural conditions. A sandy or sandy-soil substrate, with rocks and flat basking surfaces, provides both heat-retaining basking areas and security. Enclosures should emphasise floor space to allow for natural movement and activity.
Their diet should consist of a variety of small live insects such as crickets, locust hoppers, roaches, and mealworms. Food should be gut-loaded and dusted with calcium and vitamin supplements to ensure proper nutrition. Although primarily insectivorous, occasional offerings of soft plant matter can be accepted.
Fringe-toed Lizards are a fast, active species that are not typically suitable for handling. With the correct care and conditions, they can thrive in captivity and display their natural behaviours, and can live for up to 10 years.
