The Korat Supple Skink (Lygosoma koratense) is a small, secretive skink native to the Korat Plateau region of Thailand. Members of the genus Lygosoma are often called “supple skinks” due to their elongated bodies and smooth, glossy scales, which allow them to move easily through leaf litter and soil. This fossorial lifestyle makes them a shy, cryptic species that is not often observed in the wild except when unearthed from hiding.
In captivity, L. koratense thrives in a bioactive or naturalistic terrarium that emphasises ground cover. A deep, moisture-retentive substrate of soil, leaf litter, and moss should be provided, along with bark, rocks, and plant cover for hiding. These skinks do not require intense basking but benefit from a warm area of around 28–30°C while the rest of the enclosure remains cooler. Ambient humidity should be moderate to high (60–80%), reflecting their forest environment, with regular light misting.
Their diet consists primarily of small invertebrates such as crickets, roaches, springtails, and soft-bodied worms. Prey items should be appropriately sized, gut-loaded, and dusted with calcium and vitamins. Due to their secretive nature, feeding is often best done in the evening, and they may prefer smaller prey over large items. With suitable care, L. koratense can live for 6–10 years in captivity.
The Korat Supple Skink is a rarely kept reptile, appealing to enthusiasts who are seeking a species outside the norm.
