The Javan Fury (Selenocosmia javanensis) is a large, robust, fossorial tarantula native to Indonesia. It is typically dark brown to black in coloration with a dense, velvety appearance. Like many Old World species, it is fast, defensive, and lacks urticating hairs, relying on speed and a potent bite for defense.

In captivity, a deep, substrate-heavy enclosure is essential to support natural burrowing behaviour. A thick layer of moisture-retentive substrate (such as soil or coco fibre) should be provided, allowing the spider to construct and maintain a stable burrow. Once established, disturbance should be kept to a minimum.

Humidity should be maintained at moderate to high levels (70–85%), with the substrate kept slightly moist but not saturated. Adequate ventilation is important to prevent stagnant conditions. A shallow water dish should always be available.

Temperature should remain stable within a warm range. This species does not require direct basking but benefits from consistent ambient warmth and a slight thermal gradient.

Feeding consists of appropriately sized live insects such as crickets and roaches. Feeding should occur once or twice weekly depending on size, with prey introduced near the burrow entrance. As a highly reclusive species, it will often capture prey and retreat underground to feed.
