The Cranwell’s Horned Frog (Ceratophrys cranwelli), commonly called the Pacman Frog, is a stout, wide-mouthed amphibian native to the Chaco region of South America. Named for its enormous mouth and insatiable appetite, this species spends much of its life partially buried, ambushing prey that wanders too close.

In captivity, these frogs are popular for their large size, ease of care, and wide range of colour morphs available. Their care is relatively simple: a humid environment with a substrate like coco fibre or soil mix kept moist but not waterlogged. A shallow water dish should be provided for soaking. For their size they don’t require a huge amount of space, especially vertical height, as this species is largely terrestrial and sedentary.

Pacman Frogs do not require a hot basking spot, as this can dry out their skin and cause health problems. Instead, an ambient temperature of 24–28°C should be maintained, with a gentle night drop by a couple of degrees. Whilst many sources claim UVB lighting is optional, it does provide health benefits, particularly in long-term care, and a generally healthier animal.

Their diet is highly carnivorous, consisting of appropriately sized crickets, locusts, roaches, earthworms, and occasional small vertebrates such as pinkie mice. Due to their sedentary lifestyle and voracious appetite, care must be taken to avoid overfeeding and obesity. All food should be dusted with calcium and vitamin supplements to maintain strong bones and good health.

Cranwell’s Horned Frogs are long-lived and hardy captives, often living 10–15 years in captivity with proper care. They are not a handling species, due to their delicate skin, strong bite and desire to have all four feet on the ground.
