Henkel’s Leaf-tailed Gecko (Uroplatus henkeli) is the third-largest member of the genus, rivalled only by U. fimbriatus and giganteus. With its wide, flat tail and remarkable bark-like patterning, it is a master of camouflage, blending seamlessly with tree trunks and lichen-covered branches. Nocturnal and secretive, it emerges at night to hunt large insects in the dense forests of northern Madagascar.
In captivity, U. henkeli requires a spacious, vertically oriented enclosure, with ample cork bark, branches, and foliage to mimic its natural habitat and provide secure resting spots. Humidity should be maintained at 70–85%, with regular misting to provide drinking water and aid shedding, while good ventilation is vital to prevent fungal or respiratory problems.
Their diet should consist of a variety of large insects such as crickets, roaches, and locusts, supplemented with calcium and vitamin powders. Food is best offered in the evening, in line with their nocturnal feeding habits.
Uroplatus henkeli is slightly more robust and tolerant than some of its relatives but remains a sensitive species requiring precise husbandry. It should be regarded as a display animal only, since handling can cause stress and damage to its delicate skin. With proper care, this striking gecko can live for 10–15 years in captivity, making it a rewarding species for advanced keepers.
Price is for a sexed pair, 1 male and 1 female.
