The Halmahera Sailfin Dragon (Hydrosaurus weberi) is a large, semi-aquatic agamid adapted to humid, tropical environments. It typically exhibits a green to olive or brownish base coloration with banding or mottling, providing camouflage in vegetation and along riverbanks. The species is characterized by a laterally compressed tail with a prominent sail-like crest, as well as a dorsal crest along the body. It is primarily diurnal and strongly associated with aquatic habitats.
In captivity, a large, secure enclosure is required, incorporating both terrestrial and aquatic elements. Ample space should be provided for climbing and movement, with sturdy branches, elevated basking platforms, and dense cover. A substantial water area suitable for soaking and swimming is essential.
A clear thermal gradient must be established, including a high-temperature basking zone and cooler retreat areas. High humidity should be maintained through regular misting and the presence of water features, while ensuring sufficient ventilation. High-output UVB lighting is necessary in indoor enclosures to support calcium metabolism and overall health.
This species requires a varied omnivorous diet consisting of leafy greens, vegetables, and fruit, alongside appropriately sized invertebrates and occasional vertebrate prey. Balanced nutrition and controlled feeding are important to prevent health issues.
