The Green-Eyed Gecko (Gekko smithii) is a large, robust nocturnal gecko native to humid Southeast Asian forests. It is typically grey to greenish-grey in coloration with darker mottling, providing effective camouflage on tree trunks and man-made structures. The species is strongly scansorial and is frequently encountered on vertical surfaces at height, particularly on large trees and buildings.

A vertically oriented enclosure with substantial climbing space is required. Large branches, cork bark slabs, and vertical surfaces should be provided, along with dense foliage to create visual cover and multiple elevated resting sites. Due to its size, sturdy enclosure furnishings are important to support frequent climbing.

A stable thermal gradient should be maintained, with a warm zone and cooler retreat areas available throughout the enclosure. Moderate to high humidity is appropriate and should be maintained through regular misting and suitable substrate choice, while ensuring adequate ventilation. A large, shallow water dish should always be provided.

This species feeds readily on a wide range of appropriately sized live insects, with occasional small vertebrate prey taken opportunistically in larger individuals. Feeding typically occurs at night, and diet variety is beneficial. Calcium supplementation is recommended in captive care.

Due to its size, strength, and nocturnal activity, this species is best maintained with minimal handling. When provided with suitable environmental conditions, it exhibits natural behaviours including climbing, vertical ambush foraging, nocturnal activity, and regular use of elevated shelter sites.
