The Greek Speckled Woodlouse, Armadillidium peraccae is a smaller species of Armadillidium native to Greece and Italy. It’s broad flat shape and rough texture make it appear more like a Porcellio species when compared to other woodlice. The species name “peraccae” is honoring the Italian herpetologist Mario Giacinto Peracca (1861-1923), curator of reptiles and amphibians at the Turin Museum of Zoology.

A. peraccae is a rather unique species that not only has an interesting shell texture and odd bluish purple colour to their appearance compared to most Armadillidium species, but they are also fairly easy to care for. If kept correctly it breeds quite quickly and produces year round. Unlike many other Isopod species, A. peraccae do well in temperate, semi-arid environments and have issues moulting under tropical conditions; it is theorised that their bumpy appearance makes them hydrophobic in order to limit their contact with water. This aversion to high temperatures and humidity limits their useability as bioactive custodians, for example Dart Frog setups would be unsuitable for them. However if their requirements are met this species is easy to maintain and incredibly prolific.
