This specimen is a fossilised goniatite belonging to the genus Manticoceras, an extinct group of marine cephalopods that lived during the Devonian Period. Goniatites were early relatives of later ammonites and modern cephalopods such as squid and octopus, and are recognised by their coiled, chambered shells.

Manticoceras species were active marine predators that inhabited warm, shallow seas. Their shells were divided into internal chambers connected by a tube called a siphuncle, which helped regulate buoyancy. The suture lines, where the internal walls met the outer shell, are relatively simple compared to later ammonites and are an important feature for identification.

During the Devonian, much of present-day North Africa was covered by tropical seas that supported abundant marine life. Moroccan fossil deposits from this period are well known for producing well-preserved goniatites, corals, and other invertebrates.

These fossils often retain clear shell outlines, visible whorls, and suture patterns. Preservation varies, with some specimens showing natural compression or minor wear from burial and exposure.
