The New Caledonian Giant Gecko (Rhacodactylus leachianus) is the largest gecko species in the world, with adults commonly reaching 35–40 cm in length. Native to the rainforests of New Caledonia, they are nocturnal, arboreal lizards that spend much of their time climbing trees and sheltering in hollows. They are known for their impressive size and in high demand from gecko enthusiasts. Their scientific name leachianus is the explanation behind their nickname of “Leachie.”

In captivity, Leachianus Geckos require spacious vertical enclosures with strong climbing structures, secure hides like cork tubes, and moderate humidity. Ambient conditions should be kept at 22–26°C, avoiding high heat, with gentle gradients up to 28°C tolerated. Humidity should be maintained around 60–80% through regular misting.

Their diet consists of formulated gecko diets designed for New Caledonian species, supplemented with insects and occasionally vertebrate prey such as small pinkie mice. In nature they feed mainly on fruit, nectar, insects and small geckos like juvenile Crested Geckos and other New Caledonian species like Eurydactylodes and Bavayia. They are long-lived reptiles, with lifespans exceeding 20 years in captivity when properly cared for.

Although bulkier and more territorial than other New Caledonian geckos, Leachies are hardy, striking reptiles prized by enthusiasts for their size, loud vocalisations, and impressive presence. If giving them the space their large size demands they make fascinating, long-lived captives for all levels of reptile keeper.
