A geode is a round hollow rock that contains a cavity lined with crystals. Their name comes from the Greek word Geoides which means ‘earth-like’. Geodes can form in most types of rock and do so in a variety of different ways. In volcanic rock they start out as air pockets, whereas in sedimentary rocks the pockets may be the result of animal burrows, mud deposits or plant roots. Over time a pocket is created and made larger, and the outer area hardens into a round spherical shape. The spaces are then filled with groundwater travelling through the earth. On its travels water collects a variety of minerals, such as quartz or amethyst, these then get deposited on the inside of the pockets in the rock and over an exceptional long period of time this builds up. This formation process means each one is completely unique.
Geodes can be found all over the world. Though they are most abundant in deserts, volcanic ash beds, or areas with plentiful limestone.
