Crab meat is excellent food source for many animals; it’s high protein content and minimal fat levels, makes them equally as common as a human food. These high quality Freshwater Crab of the species Somanniathelphusa sinensis are caught humanely in rivers and streams in Vietnam. They are then minced, mixed with water and then flash frozen.
Most crab meat available in supermarkets is from marine species, these often contain sea salt which can cause health issues in terrestrial and freshwater animals that aren’t used to feeding on prey from saline environments.
Crab meat makes a great food option for many reptiles such as: Caiman Lizards (Dracaena guinanensis), Monitor Lizards like Asian Water Monitors (Varanus salvator); Skink species like Pink Tongue Skinks (Cyclodomorphus gerrardii) and Blue Tongue Skinks (Tiliqua sp.): and various Turtle species. They’re also a great food source for large predatory fish like Catfish and Rays.
Caiman Lizards (Dracaena guinanensis) are often regarded as difficult to maintain in captivity, this is mostly due to being fed an incorrect diet of cat food and other meat products. If offered a more natural food source, such as freshwater crab and snails they can live long, healthy lives.
Care Instructions:
Please note all frozen food should be defrosted thoroughly before use. Defrost frozen food naturally at room temperature on newspaper or kitchen towels away from food, food preparation surfaces and equipment. The prey can be warmed up in warm tap water. DO NOT defrost in boiling water or in a microwave. Always wash your hands thoroughly after handling raw or defrosted food. Always disinfect all surfaces that have come into contact with the defrosted food.
