The Egyptian Agama (Laudakia vulgaris) is a medium-sized, robust agamid lizard closely related to the stellio group. It is a diurnal, rock-dwelling species well-adapted to hot, arid climates. Recognisable by its spiny scales, triangular head, and often vibrant male breeding colours, L. vulgaris is a striking and active display species.
In the wild, they are found across rocky semi-desert and scrub environments, where they spend much of their time basking on exposed rocks or stone walls, retreating into cracks and crevices when threatened. Males are territorial, engaging in head-bobbing and push-up displays to ward off rivals and court females.
In captivity, L. vulgaris requires a spacious, arid-style enclosure with strong overhead lighting and full-spectrum UVB. A basking hotspot of 38–42°C is essential, alongside a cooler gradient for thermoregulation. The enclosure should include rocky structures, ledges, and hides, allowing for natural climbing, basking, and retreat behaviours.
Their diet should consist mostly of gut-loaded insects such as crickets, roaches, locusts, and beetles. Occasional leafy greens, edible flowers, or soft fruits may be accepted but should remain a small part of the diet. Calcium and vitamin supplementation is essential, particularly for growing juveniles.
The Egyptian Agama is an alert, hardy species best suited as a display reptile. While not overly tolerant of handling, they are fascinating to observe due to their bold basking behaviour and dynamic social displays. With proper care, Laudakia vulgaris can live 10+ years in captivity.
