The Dune Gecko (Stenodactylus petrii) is a small, desert-adapted gecko well suited to life on shifting sands. It typically displays pale sandy coloration with darker banding or mottling, providing excellent camouflage against desert substrates. Like other members of the genus, it possesses fringed toes that allow efficient movement across loose sand. It is nocturnal and emerges at night to hunt for prey.

In captivity, a horizontally oriented enclosure with a deep sand-based substrate is recommended to allow natural burrowing behaviour. Fine sand or a sand/soil mix should be provided, with sufficient depth for digging. Hides should be included, particularly partially buried shelters to mimic natural refuge sites.

Humidity should be kept low (30–50%), with good ventilation to replicate its arid environment. A small, shallow water dish should always be available, though this species often derives much of its hydration from prey. Light, occasional misting can be provided but should not significantly increase humidity.

Temperature should include a warm basking area and a cooler gradient for thermoregulation. A heat source such as a heat mat or overhead heating can be used to achieve appropriate conditions.

Feeding consists of small live insects such as crickets and mealworms. Feeding should occur in the evening when the gecko is active, with prey items appropriately sized. Calcium and vitamin supplementation is recommended to maintain proper health.
