The Dark Earth Tiger (Chilobrachys sp. “Kaeng Krachan”) is a striking old-world species known for its shadowy, charcoal-to-black colouration and subtle iridescence that becomes visible under good lighting. Originating from the humid tropical forests of western Thailand, this species is a prolific burrower and extremely heavy webber, often creating elaborate, silk-covered tunnel systems both above and beneath the substrate.
In captivity, this species requires a terrestrial enclosure with deep substrate—typically 15–20 cm or more—such as soil or coco fibre to support natural burrowing behaviour. Cork bark, branches, or other structural elements should be provided to serve as anchor points for their extensive webbing. Temperatures should remain between 24–27 °C with high humidity around 70–80%, balanced with adequate ventilation to prevent stagnant conditions. A shallow water dish should always be available.
Their diet consists of appropriately sized insects such as crickets, roaches, and mealworms. Like most Chilobrachys, this species shows fast, aggressive feeding responses and grows quickly. Feeding should be halted when the spider enters pre-moult, as they often seal themselves inside a silk-lined chamber during this time.
The Dark Earth Tiger is fast, defensive, and highly reactive, making it unsuitable for handling and best suited for experienced keepers familiar with old-world species. Despite their attitude, they are rewarding to keep, displaying intricate webwork, active burrow engineering, and impressive feeding behaviour. Females can live 12–15+ years, while males usually reach 3–4 years.
