Few invertebrates have captured the imagination of hobbyists quite like the Cubaris sp. “Rubber Ducky”. Instantly recognisable for their endearing “duck-faced” appearance—created by the yellow coloration around the head and the rounded facial structure—this species became a viral sensation and remains one of the most sought-after isopods in the world of terrarium and vivarium keeping.

The genus Cubaris is composed of over a hundred described species, with many more awaiting scientific identification. Most are tropical, humidity-loving woodlice originating from Southeast Asia. They are capable of conglobation (rolling into a ball) for protection, much like Armadillidium, though Cubaris generally require warmer and more humid conditions than their temperate cousins.

Cubaris sp. “Rubber Ducky” hails from limestone cave systems in southern Thailand, where it lives among damp leaf litter, decaying wood, and calcium-rich rock. They prefer stable, high humidity and good airflow, with part of the enclosure kept consistently moist and another section allowed to remain drier. Deep, nutrient-rich substrate layered with moss, bark, and leaf litter helps maintain proper microclimates and supports their burrowing behavior.

Though slow-growing and initially sensitive, once established this species can form a thriving colony. Their diet consists of decaying wood, leaf litter, and supplemental foods such as fish flakes, vegetable matter, or specialized isopod diets. Calcium sources—like cuttlebone or limestone chips—are also important for healthy moulting and exoskeleton development.

Best suited to intermediate or advanced keepers comfortable maintaining consistent warmth and humidity, they are a rewarding and visually striking addition to any bioactive setup.
