Cubaris are highly sought after in the isopod-keeping hobby, with many varieties prized for their unique colours and patterns. Most species remain scientifically undescribed, and are instead known by their hobby names such as ‘Rubber Ducky’, ‘Bumblebee’, and ‘Cherry Blossom’.
Cubaris sp. ‘Cherry Blossom’ is one of the most attractive forms, named for its soft pink and white patterning, which gives the isopods a delicate, pastel appearance reminiscent of cherry blossom petals. Like others in the genus, they are able to conglobate (roll into a ball) as a defence mechanism.
This species requires consistently high humidity and is more sensitive than some Cubaris varieties, making it better suited to intermediate keepers. They thrive in enclosures with deep, moisture-retentive substrate, covered with leaf litter, moss, and bark to help trap humidity and create microhabitats. Providing both damp refuges and slightly drier zones is essential for their health and breeding success.
Cubaris sp. ‘Cherry Blossom’ is a slower-growing and more delicate variety, but its unique colour and rarity make it a prized addition to isopod collections.
