Cubaris Isopod keeping has grown into a popular hobby largely thanks to striking species like Cubaris sp. “Rubber Ducky” and other visually unique morphs. The genus Cubaris contains over 100 described species, with many more undescribed; most hobby specimens are identified by nicknames, often linked to their appearance, rather than formal taxonomy.
Cubaris sp. ‘Bumblebee’ is a visually stunning species named for its bold black and yellow banded coloration, reminiscent of a bumblebee. Like other Cubaris, they can conglobate (roll into a ball) when threatened, and their tropical origin means they require stable temperatures and relatively high humidity (60–80%) to thrive and successfully moult.
This species is moderately sized and is considered hardy for a Cubaris, making it suitable for keepers wanting to branch into the genus. Adults are semi-fossorial, spending some time on the surface while also burrowing occasionally. Providing a substrate covered with leaves, moss, bark, and other detritus will help maintain a humid microclimate and encourage natural behaviour.
The Bumblebee Cubaris is a striking and productive species in captivity, making it a great addition for both isopod collections and bioactive enclosures.
