The Crested Gecko (Correlophus ciliatus), also known as the eyelash gecko, is a medium-sized arboreal gecko native to New Caledonia. Long believed extinct until its rediscovery in 1994, it has since become one of the most popular pet geckos due to its hardiness, ease of care, and striking variety of colours and patterns. They are primarily nocturnal and semi-arboreal, spending most of their time climbing and hiding among branches and foliage.
In captivity, Crested Geckos thrive in vertically oriented enclosures that allow climbing opportunities and provide cover through live or artificial plants. They do best at moderate temperatures, with ambient conditions between 22–26°C with no need for intense basking spots; overheating should be avoided. Humidity is important, with regular misting to maintain levels between 60–80% and to provide drinking opportunities.
They are omnivorous, feeding readily on formulated powdered diets designed for New Caledonian geckos (Repashy or Pangea), supplemented with appropriately sized live insects. With proper care, Crested Geckos can live 15–20 years in captivity. Their manageable size, lack of aggression, and straightforward husbandry requirements make them an excellent choice for reptile keepers.
