The Corn Snake (Pantherophis guttatus) is one of the most popular pet snakes worldwide, favoured for its manageable size, docile temperament, and wide range of colour and pattern morphs. In the wild, they are habitat generalists, found across much of the south-eastern United States in forests, fields, and farmlands where they actively hunt small rodents and other vertebrates.

In captivity, Corn Snakes thrive in a spacious, secure enclosure with both floor space and climbing opportunities. A thermal gradient should be provided, with a basking spot around 30°C and cooler areas in the mid-20s °C, dropping slightly at night. A hide should be available at both the warm and cool ends, along with secure branches and décor for climbing. Substrates such as aspen, cypress mulch, or paper-based bedding work well, and a water bowl large enough for soaking should always be present.

Their diet consists of appropriately sized rodents, offered every 5–7 days for juveniles and every 10–14 days for adults. Like most colubrids, they are good feeders and rarely refuse meals during the summer months.

Corn Snakes are generally calm, easy to handle, and highly suited for both beginner keepers. With proper care, they can live 15–20 years in captivity. Their varied appearance, hardiness, and ease of care has made them a cornerstone of the reptile hobby.
