The Flat-tailed Gecko (Uroplatus fimbriatus) is one of the largest species of the genus Uroplatus, rivalled only by giganteus, and one of the most iconic geckos in the reptile hobby. Known for its remarkable bark-like camouflage, fringed body margins, and wide flattened tail, it blends seamlessly against tree trunks and branches in its native rainforest habitat. Nocturnal and highly adapted for ambush predation, this gecko is a master of disguise.
In captivity, U. fimbriatus requires a large, vertically oriented enclosure to accommodate its impressive size and arboreal lifestyle. Strong emphasis should be placed on natural décor – cork bark, branches, and dense foliage – to provide both climbing space and cover. Humidity should be maintained at 70–90%, with daily misting to supply drinking water and create the humid microclimate essential for proper shedding and hydration. Good airflow is equally important to avoid respiratory issues.
Their diet consists of large insects such as crickets, roaches, and locusts, supplemented with calcium and vitamins. Prey should be released in the evening to match their nocturnal hunting activity.
Uroplatus fimbriatus is a sensitive species that demands precise husbandry, making it best suited to advanced keepers. Handling should be avoided, as stress can be harmful and may compromise their delicate skin. With correct care and stable conditions, they can live for 10–15 years in captivity, making them a true “display-only” reptile and a prized species among enthusiasts.
Price is for a sexed pair, 1 male and 1 female.
