The Common Boa (Boa imperator) is one of the most widely kept boa species, native across Central America and parts of northern South America. They are highly adaptable snakes, occupying a variety of habitats ranging from tropical rainforests and savannahs to drier scrub environments. Typically nocturnal or crepuscular, they are ambush predators that feed on mammals and birds. They can live over 20 years and grow to over 2m in length.
In captivity, Common Boa require a large, secure enclosure with appropriate heating and humidity. A basking spot of around 30–32°C should be provided, with ambient temperatures maintained in the mid-to-high 20s°C and a slight night-time drop. A humidity level of 60–70% is ideal, with access to a large water bowl for soaking. They are fed on a diet of appropriately sized rodents and birds, offered at intervals depending on age and growth.
Common boas are hardy, long-lived snakes that are widely bred in captivity. They are a popular choice due to their generally calm temperaments and larger yet manageable adult size. They also come in a wide array of morphs including both pattern and colour mutations, creating a huge variation in appearances.
