The Asian Painted Frog (Kaloula pulchra) is a robust, terrestrial microhylid frog native to South and Southeast Asia. It has a characteristically rounded body, short limbs, and a brown to reddish-brown dorsal colouration with contrasting pale or yellowish lateral bands. The species is predominantly nocturnal, spending much of the daytime concealed beneath leaf litter, fallen wood, or within loose substrate before becoming active after dark.
In captivity, a horizontally oriented enclosure with a deep, moisture-retentive substrate should be provided to accommodate the species’ natural burrowing behaviour. Coconut fibre, soil-based substrates, or similar amphibian-safe materials can be used, with sufficient depth for the frogs to partially or completely bury themselves. Cork bark, leaf litter, plants, and other suitable shelters should also be provided to create secure areas of cover.
Humidity should be maintained at moderate to high levels, while avoiding permanently waterlogged substrate. Good ventilation is important to prevent stagnant conditions. A shallow water dish containing clean, treated water should always be available, allowing the frogs to soak and maintain hydration.
A stable thermal gradient should be maintained rather than excessive heat, with temperatures generally kept in the low to mid-20s°C and a slight reduction at night. The species does not require intense basking temperatures and should always have access to cooler areas within the enclosure.
Asian Painted Frogs are opportunistic insectivores and readily accept a range of appropriately sized live invertebrates. Crickets, roaches, mealworms, ants, termites, and other suitably sized feeder insects can be offered, with food items appropriately supplemented with calcium and other required nutrients. Feeding is best carried out during the evening or at night when the species is naturally active.
