The Chiang Mai Gecko (Dixonius chiangmai) is a small, secretive member of the Dixonius genus, recently described from northern Thailand. This species is well adapted to life among the leaf litter and on the forest floor in humid rainforests. Its compact size make it an appealing species for small naturalistic enclosures.
In the wild, D. chiangmai shelters beneath rocks, rotting wood, and dense ground cover, emerging at night to forage for tiny insects. To replicate this in captivity, a horizontal terrarium with deep substrate, leaf litter, cork flats, and plenty of concealed retreats is ideal. They thrive in moderately humid environments—typically 60–75%—with regular light misting and good airflow. Their small size makes them excellent candidates for planted vivaria with microhabitats, mossy hides, and textured surfaces for exploring.
Temperatures should remain on the cooler end of typical tropical gecko care. A gentle warm area can be provided, but strong basking lights are unnecessary and may cause stress. UVB lighting should be offered, though this species does not appreciate intense illumination.
As insectivores, they feed on a variety of very small live prey, such as small crickets and hoppers. Offering diverse feeders and dusting them with calcium and multivitamins ensures proper nutrition, especially for juveniles and breeding females.
With appropriate husbandry, Dixonius chiangmai can live many years in captivity and becomes more visible once well established in a secure environment. Handling should remain minimal due to their small size.
