The Cardamon Forest Gecko (Cyrtodactylus intermedius) is a slender, beautifully patterned forest gecko distributed widely across mainland Southeast Asia. Its cryptic coloration allows it to blend seamlessly into leaf litter and bark. The species name “intermedius” reflects its position as one of the more adaptable and widespread members of the genus, inhabiting a broad range of forested microhabitats.
In nature, C. intermedius is a primarily nocturnal forager that shelters beneath logs, stones, and dense ground cover during the day. Once night falls, it patrols the forest floor and low vegetation in search of insects. In captivity, they appreciate horizontally oriented enclosures with ample hiding places, cork flats, leaf litter, loose substrate, and driftwood to replicate their natural terrain. Live plants, sturdy branches, and shaded retreats help maintain appropriate humidity and create a realistic environment. Target humidity of 60–80% with regular misting promotes hydration and natural behaviour, provided the enclosure maintains good airflow.
As with other Cyrtodactylus, these geckos do best at moderate temperatures and are sensitive to overheating. A mild warm spot is optional rather than essential, and the majority of the enclosure should remain cool, humid, and well-shaded. Low-level UVB should be provided to promote healthy growth.
Their diet consists of small, active live insects. A rotation of crickets, roaches, mealworms, black soldier fly larvae, and occasional soft-bodied feeders like silkworms provides excellent nutrition. Dusting feeders with calcium and multivitamin supplements ensures proper growth and health, especially in juveniles.
With attentive care, Cyrtodactylus intermedius can live 8–12+ years. They are typically shy but steady, preferring to remain hidden during the day and emerging after dark to explore. Handling should be kept to a minimum, as they are delicate and quick-moving. For dedicated keepers who enjoy naturalistic, bioactive-style enclosures and observing subtle nocturnal behaviour, the Intermediate Bent-toed Gecko is a fascinating and rewarding species.
