The Burmese Python (Python bivittatus) is one of the largest snake species in the world, native to Southeast Asia. They are non-venomous constrictors, known for their immense strength, docile nature, and striking pattern of dark brown blotches on a lighter background. In the wild, these snakes inhabit a range of habitats, including forests, grasslands, marshes, and areas near water, where they hunt mammals and birds.

In captivity, Burmese Pythons require very large, secure enclosures due to their size and strength. A basking area of 32–35°C should be provided, with ambient temperatures maintained around 22–28°C and a night-time drop to ~22°C. High-quality UVB lighting is optional but may aid overall health. Enclosures should include sturdy hides, water for soaking, and humidity retaining substrate.

Their diet in captivity should reflect their natural carnivorous habits: appropriately sized rodents, rabbits, or poultry depending on snake size. Feedings should be scaled to body size and spaced appropriately; juveniles require more frequent feedings, while adults may be fed every 2 weeks or less, depending on prey size and time of year.

Burmese Pythons are long-lived, intelligent, and relatively docile, often considered one of the least aggressive giant snakes. However, their enormous adult size, and strength means they are not for the easily intimidated; reptile owners should be able to provide the space and resources to maintain them. With proper care, Burmese Pythons can live over 20 years in captivity.
