Violet Millipedes (Spirobolus caudulanus) is a medium-sized millipede species known for its deep violet or purplish exoskeleton and smooth, cylindrical body shape. It is a slow-moving, non-aggressive detritivore that relies heavily on decomposing plant matter as its main diet.
In captivity, a deep, nutrient-rich substrate is essential—typically a mix of organic topsoil, rotting hardwood, decayed leaves, and moss. The enclosure should remain humid but well-ventilated, with plenty of leaf litter and soft wood for feeding and burrowing. A stable moisture gradient helps mimic the damp forest floor conditions it prefers.
This species is generally hardy and easy to care for. Supplementary foods such as soft fruits (banana, melon, apple) or vegetables (cucumber, squash) can be offered in small amounts alongside the primary detritus diet.
Violet Millipedes are peaceful, handle stress poorly, and should be disturbed minimally. They thrive in groups and exhibit natural burrowing and foraging behaviours when provided with suitable environmental conditions.
