Budgett’s Frog (Lepidobatrachus laevis) is a large, robust, semi-aquatic anuran adapted to wetland environments. It typically exhibits a grey to olive-green coloration with a broad, flattened body and an enlarged head. The species is primarily aquatic during active periods and is known for remaining partially buried in substrate or submerged in shallow water.
A semi-aquatic enclosure is required, with a substantial water section and a shallow terrestrial or mud-like area. The land portion should consist of soft, moisture-retentive substrate that allows burrowing, as this species frequently aestivates or rests partially buried. Water depth should be shallow enough to allow easy surfacing but sufficient for full submersion.
A stable thermal gradient should be maintained, with warm water and ambient temperatures supporting activity. Moderate humidity is generally sufficient, though water quality is the most critical factor and should be maintained through frequent changes or filtration. A large, shallow water area is essential.
This species is highly carnivorous and opportunistic, feeding on a wide variety of prey items in captivity, including appropriately sized fish, insects, and other protein sources. Feeding response is typically strong, and portion control is important to prevent obesity.
Due to its sit-and-wait predatory strategy and tendency to remain buried or submerged, Budgett’s Frog is best maintained in a low-disturbance setup. Under suitable conditions, it exhibits natural behaviours including ambush feeding, burrowing, and prolonged periods of partial submersion.
