The Black-eyed Bent-toed Gecko (Cyrtodactylus nigriocularis) is a small, forest-dwelling species endemic to southern Vietnam. It is named for its distinctive jet-black eyes, which have no visible pupil or iris, just solid all black eyes. This nocturnal gecko hides in rock crevices, leaf litter, and under logs during the day, emerging at night to hunt.
In captivity, C. nigriocularis requires a secure, naturalistic terrarium with ample hiding places, climbing structures, and cover. Cork bark, branches, and leaf litter help replicate their native environment. Temperatures should remain between 24–28°C, with a slight night-time drop. Humidity should be kept high, between 70–90%, with frequent misting to provide hydration and support natural behaviour. Good airflow is equally important to avoid stagnation.
Their diet should consist of a varied selection of small live insects, such as crickets, roaches, and worms, appropriately gut-loaded and dusted with supplements. Despite their small size, they are active nocturnal hunters with a strong feeding response. With consistent husbandry, C. nigriocularis can live for 8–12 years in captivity.
Although not yet widely available in the reptile hobby, the Black-eyed Bent-toed Gecko is a fascinating species for experienced gecko keepers. Its unusual appearance and perfect suitability to bioactive enclosures make a great option for enthusiasts looking for something a bit different.
